As with many new things in ones field, most of my professors, including my advisor, didnt really understand what I was trying to do. The old notions of what constituted professional development were too embedded. No matter how much research I presented on the various theories and principles that formed the basis for effective professional development, that old concept of the speaker on the first day of school and workshops on nothing particularly related to the classroom needs of teachers colored his understanding of my design. I had reached the point of deciding to be an ABD when my superintendent came to my office for a chat. Its an exercise, he reminded me. Forget trying to break new ground. So when youre frustrated with rewriting your proposal for the umpteenth time, when you cant make your advisor understand what youre trying to do, when your desire to make breakthrough contributions to your field get the better of you, remember that this is all an academic exercise. It is your admission ticket so that you can do what you really want to do in your chosen field.

All departments shall be required to substantially comply with the following guidelines. When the final grade for the clerkship is assigned, students will receive e mail notification or a memorandum from the department indicating that the evaluations are complete and have been sent to the Office of Education and Curriculum. This notification will include a reminder of the Grade Review Policy. If a student believes there has been an error in the grading process, or believes the final evaluation does not accurately reflect the performance, the student may speak informally with the faculty to find a resolution. However, the student is not required to pursue an informal review, but instead may request a formal review. To begin the formal review process, a student must provide the Clerkship Director with a written document that outlines the basis for the request. Unless there are unusual or compelling circumstances, the written request, along with any supporting documentation, must be filed by the student within 30 working days of the official recording of the final grade. The request for review will prompt a review of the students portfolio. The outcome of this review will be shared with the student before any change in evaluation is submitted to the Office of Student Affairs. The Clerkship Director, in writing, must respond to the students request within 10 working days of receipt of the request for review. Should the student wish to have further review of the Clerkship Directors decision, a written request for grade review will be submitted to the Chair of the Department within 10 working days of the decision of the Clerkship Director.

Earlier in Term 3, we were lucky enough to welcome Darren Dickson Newcomb HS alum 1977 1980 as a virtual guest speaker for students in five classes across two sessions. Darren left school after Year 10 and completed an apprenticeship in graphics reproduction, before deciding to pursue a career in surfboard shaping. 30+ years later, Dicko Surfboards has become a success and allows him to indulge his passion for surfing every day. The Alumni QandA took place just before schools went back into remote learning. Darren answered questions about his career pathway, following his dreams, achieving work life balance, starting a business, working with clients, the skills needed to become a surfboard shaper, and much more. He stressed the importance of choosing a career that you will enjoy. The students from Ourschool's 18 partner schools heard from an amazing panel of six Peter Mac staff, also alumni of the public high schools involved in the Ourschool program. The careers covered included: radiation therapist, medical physicist, cancer surgery personal assistant, nurse unit manager and research assistant.
